The respect and awe that I had for Joe Paterno in leading and guiding his young football players will forever be tarnished by his lack of concern for that young man! By his turning a blind eye to that atrocity in his own program! There is nothing that will ever make it right in that victim's mind or heart. I too hope Joe Paterno will take the high road, but I am heartsick for the young boy who is now a man and will never forget what happened to him. And how disgusted I am with those who staunchly support "Penn State" by minimizing what happened. What would they think if this had been them or their child? There are a lot of ways Penn State and Joe Paterno and the football program can take a stand against child abuse - I hope they will make use of the opportunity!

We can't begin to imagine the far-reaching effects of this whole situation. It is very tragic that some young lives might be totally wasted because some adults chose not to be responsible. If any thought that by ignoring the situation it would go away, they should have remembered that your sins always catch up with you. So sad that JoePa didn't get to go out in a blaze of glory!

Is that really enough or is it way to late for that? Sounds like a lot of kids could have been spared if he had only spoken up.

Wow Jim, very powerful, very scary...it took my breath away. Abuse is such a frightening reality...what can I do to help? I will start praying now.

I agree with you, Jim, that these statistics are scary. Yet this post has no comments and your post about reading a bible in school has several. To me, this is further indication of our inability as Christians to focus on the real issues of the world. We continually get stuck on the (dare I say it?) minor issues of our world. We'd rather argue about school prayer, reading the bible in school, or homosexuality (yes, I know this is going to make someone sit up and howl) than on issues like abuse, hunger, neglect, and epidemic disease.
Maybe I'm wrong and we really care about these larger issues on which Jesus taught, and we get upset about the minor things because we can actually do something about it. What do you think?

I totally agree with your assessment. In reviewing the Arizona Law regarding religion in the schools, the first Question Regarding Student's Rights is:

1.Does a student have the right to express his/her opinions and beliefs in school?
Yes. A student can express his/her opinions orally and in writing. A student must, however, make sure that in expressing this opinion or belief that he/she does so in a way that does not disrupt classes or other school activities. In addition, the student should not use vulgar language.

Obviously silently reading a book does not violate the separation of religion from school doctrines. That teacher was grossly misinformed; I would hope she was not expressing her own opinions!

You are quite correct; the teacher has no business saying a student can't bring it to school. Tell the parent to read the riot act to the teacher, and if they still balk, contact the local ACLU, who can probably settle it with a phone call to the school principal.

Should be up to the parent - not the teacher or school as long as the kid is not reading aloud and sharing.
